Saksit Namwong (Tor), from Loei in north-eastern Thailand, is a graduate of Mahasarakham University (MSU). After gaining a degree in architecuture he broadened his knowledge and experience through working in the fields of urban planning, interior design and traditional furniture making, as well as for architectural firms such as Charoen and Associates in Bangkok. He joined Ton company as senior architect in 2007.
Coming from Bangkok, what do you make of the housing scene in krabi? "There are currently very few players in the market, but it is an area with huge potential. As more people come here to build, urban planning becomes very important. We should be concerned that Krabi develops into a place that people want to live in and that retains some of its orginal character and charm. "For example, many people complain about the hundreds of shop houses no being built. This is because they tend to look fairly generic. I think that these type of buildings do have their place in a growing town but the key is to give them character and style so that the streets are not boring." What do you consider to be your design printciples? "I like to think good design is in the details. Once the basic structure of a house is there, we can be creative. I am interested in using local materials such as wood and bamboo, and utilising traditional skills. This way, we can bring an artstic element to peoples homes, while keeping a clean, modern layout. In think using such materials also help conect a house to its community - both symbolically and literally, through the support of local craftsmen. "I don't advise using these type of materials for construction purposes, however. Though they are cheper, they are not hard-wearing and need replacing every few years - but they can be very effective as decorative elements both indoors and outside." What's the most important thing an architect can do for his client? "I feel my job is done when i am able to give my clients exactly what they want in term of space, style and function. This involves conveying to them a real sense of what it will be like to live in their future home. "To help them understand this before we start construction, I put a lot of work into the presentation of every project, using 3D software to bring to floorplan to life. The details, the interiors of a home are so important to envisage, as they are what the client will live with every day. He therefore needs to be able to understand what the space we have created will feel like once he is living inside it. Building a home should not be and experiment." Do you have any advice for people who are thinking of building a home in Krabi? "We have a saying in Thai: 'make the bed according to who will lie in it'. It is great if the client can come to us - maybe even before they buy the land - with a clear idea in place; not necessarily of how their home should look, but what it will be used for. The function of the property is especially important for us as architects thinking about the design and layout of a home. "For example, if the client decides in advance that they would like to rent out their villa as a holiday home, wecan help them to design something with appeal to the mass market. My experience in condo design means I know what sells and what does not in terms of style and space. If, on the other hand, the client wants a private home, we can be more creative and focused on their personal style, without worrying about if it will work for others."
